Knowing the best keywords to target is essential to any effective eCommerce SEO strategy. Now that there are more online stores emerging, it has become more challenging to rank well in Google for all relevant keywords. Your online store simply cannot afford to be “invisible” in search results, as this is how your business can attract potential customers. Here are some tips you can do an effective SEO keywords research that will help result in higher ROI and more visibility for your e-commerce business.

Check out the keywords that your existing customers are using to find your products.

Knowing what keywords you are already ranking for is a good starting point. It is easier to improve the rankings of keywords that are already bringing in customers to your business than to target a keyword that you are not ranking in the top 100 for. Use the keywords report in Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools’ search queries report to determine the search queries that your current customers use to find your website.

Once you have identified these keywords, you will also need to target those keywords that you are not yet ranking for as these will bring in new customers to your online store. It is beneficial to have a good mix of keywords composed of the ones that your website is already visible for and those that your website is not yet ranking for as this helps ensure that you are covering all angles.

Create a list of categories and products that you want promote.

Write down a list of all the categories and products that you want to have more traffic, then type them into Google Adwords Keyword Planner. You will get a list of potential keywords that you could target. Go through this list, choose the most relevant ones, and add them to your product offering.

Target long-tail keywords.

While long-tail keywords have lower search volumes than the more generic search terms, these keywords have lower competition, so it is easier to rank for these. Targeting long-tail keywords helps to drive traffic to specific pages. So, instead of targeting “cocktail dresses”, use “cocktail dresses for weddings” or “red cocktail dresses on sale”.

Study your competitors.

In most industries, there are usually one to three industry leaders ranking highly for a range of different keywords. Clearly, they are doing something right to be ranking on Google’s page 1. It won’t hurt to browse through their websites, website copy, descriptions, and the headings and meta titles they are using. This will help you get a good idea of what keywords your competitors are targeting and what you may want to target to outrank them. In the beginning, you may find it difficult to outrank your competitors for high search volume keywords. It may be much easier to outrank your competitors for long-tail keywords instead.

By adding these simple processes to your SEO strategy, you can increase your e-commerce website’s online search visibility and drive more traffic that will boost your sales and revenue. In addition to these tips, it will also be helpful for you to learn SEO from experts via SEO training and certification – something worth considering!
