There are hundreds of diet apps out there for both Android and iPhone users, but that can make it tricky to know which ones are worth using. Some will be old and outdated, some won’t work well, and some will feature poor advice. Here are five of the best – and they’re all free to download:
1. Diet Point – Weight Loss (Android and iPhone)

This is one of those apps that does just a few things, but does them so well that you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it. Diet Point – Weight Loss is dedicated to finding you the perfect diet plan, and with more than 130 in its data banks, you should be able to find one that suits your needs perfectly.
As a backup for the central feature, Diet Point – Weight Loss also includes a BMI calculator, so you can see where you stand compared with the ideal weight for your height. Naturally, you can also track and monitor your weight as you progress. Finally, there are over 500 hints and tips for more effective weight loss.
2. MyFitnessPal (Android and iPhone)

Calorie counting is a necessary part of any good diet plan, but doing it manually can be a real chore. MyFitnessPal makes the process much quicker and simpler. When you first use it, the app will ask you for some basic information, ranging from your height and weight to how old you are. You’ll also need to give your weekly weight loss target.
Once you’ve entered the data, MyFitnessPal will generate a customized diary template, with spaces for you to enter how much food and supplements you’re eating and how much exercise you’re doing. The app will consult its database, containing details of millions of foods, and let you know how you’re doing with your calorie counting.
3. My Diet Coach (iOS and Android)

This is one of the simpler apps around, but that doesn’t mean that it’s bad – far from it. This version of My Diet Coach is aimed at those who need a little encouragement to stick with their weight loss program, featuring tips on how to persevere, photos to motivate you, and regular reminders.
You also get some nice extras, such as a BMI calculator, calorie counter, and diet diary. The reminders and tips are customizable, so you can ask to be reminded to drink some water or encouraged to meet a challenge by reading a tip that’s relevant to the situation. My Diet Coach has a clear, colorful interface that makes it a good first choice.
4. Nutrino (iOS only)

Apple users with a need to know a little more than just keeping track of the foods their eating will find Nutrino extremely helpful. This app takes note of data you input regarding your personal weight loss goals, the foods you prefer to eat, and your medical profile. Then, it will help you to plan a meal that’s both tasty and healthy.
Nutrino will remember your preferences, so if you remove something from the menu it suggests, you’ll find that the app takes that into account in the future. The inbuilt Health Coach feature will let you know if there are any developments in nutritional research, making this a must-have app.
5. Weight Watchers (iOS and Android)

It’s impossible to talk about dieting without thinking of Weight Watchers, one of the most successful and long established weight loss programs. Because this app is officially licensed by Weight Watchers, it can use the trademarked PointsPlus system to help you keep track of the foods you’re eating and their nutritional values.
One thing you should know about Weight Watchers is that it operates on a subscription basis, although the app itself costs nothing to try. Prices vary, and there are frequent offers, so make sure you check those out before deciding whether to subscribe.
